Consider the German Health care system

It's a system where an employer can select from a state defined set of carriers thru statutory health insurance that is split 50/50 employer employee if they make less than 4190 euros per month. Above this one can go private. Self employed folks pay 14.9% of pay for health insurance. Note that health insurance includes 6 weeks of full disability pay and 78 weeks of up to 2250 euros per month. Artists and the like can join a plan also (see article for details). I believe a couple of other countries have similar schemes, so an NHS is not the only alternative. Now from the comments to the article what is covered differs between public and private insurance.

It seems that the media only look at canada and the UK because they can read the language. But this sort of system would work. Note that the article also comments that as everywhere health care costs are going up because we invent new treatments and keep folks alive longer.
