If we are going to force people to buy insurance (which we should, just like car insurance), we must make that insurance affordable. Without competition from a public option (or at least doing away with the anti-trust exemption), Anthem has no reason to cut costs and hardly any competition. They can operate as a monopoly, which it seems they are currently doing. As any intro macro textbook will tell you, firms that have monopolies will continue to jack up their prices until the hit the sweet spot, something Anthem must be approaching at some point soon. . .
