Reader comment on: Entitlement Society Versus Opportunity Society

Of course, this paragraph is irresistible, but oversimplifies a number of things. First, liberals are not advocating that government provide everyone everything. I think our list is rather short actually - a good education, healthcare, and the ability to live with a roof over one's head. These are the most basic needs that must be met if a person hopes to become an innovator, engage in hard work etc. I do not advocate an I-Phone in every pocket, and a flat screen TV on every wall. Second, this view completely overlooks this history of oppression in this country that puts some people on third base when born, and others sitting on the bench. It is like Romney has been biking a marathon that everyone else runs, and once has a 15 mile lead, he says everyone else can now have a bike. If we could start from scratch, with everyone in the same quality school, the same amount of accumulated family wealth etc, I would agree with Romney. But as long as people are different, people will be treated differently, and as a society we must be active in leveling the playing field to account for outsized power of those on top, who are quick to cement their advantages at the expense of everyone else. His argument is an easy one to make when he is sitting pretty on top.
