Rather than "hypocrisy," a strong case can be made, based on the fundamental changes in the classification of "independent contractor" vs. employee, that this is more appropriately described as fraud.

The SEC has cited public companies for fraud for doing far less.

But of course the NY Times would never engage in fraudulent practices.
