You're mixing the tenses

To be equivalent, Bush would have had to campaign by demonizing Big Government whilst promising the largest expansion of government since Nixon, the largest entitlement expansion since LBJ and committing Congress to spending like drunken politicians. Had Bush mentioned that he intended to bankrupt the country and "destroy the free market in order to save it" in his campaign then we'd have been talking about President Gore. The Bush Presidency, and the Republican control of Congress, is a big part of Romney's problem... can we trust them? Remember the old saying "Trust, Once Lost, Is Hard to Regain". We trusted them in 2000 and that trust turned to ashes in our mouths and a giant pile of debt that the great-great-great-grandkids will still be paying off. How then can we trust a man, Romney, who routinely issues mutually exclusive statements? We must decide which statement represents the "real Romney" but there doesn't appear to be one. Perhaps he's a collection of mutant clones?
