Often the goal as with the Toyota hearings is to make executives sweat so that they change their ways without legislation. Often the light of day makes practices that are legal no longer appitizing to the company. Always has been thus. Since it's so hard to pass legislation, this has the same effect, to make you justify whatever it is you are doing that they don't like.
