Reader comment on: What If George W. Bush Had Done That?

These articles write themselves, and are flawed in the same way. Bush and Obama come from different ends of the political spectrum. For every item that Gerstein points to in which he thinks there is a double standard, there is an opposite item in which Bush had a double standard. The press gives free passes when a President acts against his perceived ideology. The press didn't hound Bush's stimulus, or his increase in money to fight AIDS in Africa as a waste, or his push for "amnesty" for undocumented immigrants. These efforts all went against what we expect of a Republican President, so we make an assumption that he couldn't possibly be over-reaching. The same is true on the opposite end for Obama. The question isn't whether the Presidents should be treated the same way on each issue - they shouldn't. The question is whether the stance is right or wrong. In many cases I disagree with Obama (extra-judicial killings is chilling, Afghanistan is a disaster, healthcare should have been single payer etc).
