But with the cost of soda being so low that a lot of places give a cup and let you fill it (cheaper than having an employee do the job), it will have the effect of either driving back to full serve for beverages as it used to be, or effectively restricting cup sizes to 16 oz.

What is interesting is that this was the big size in the 1950s the 6 oz coke was standard. Back then .05 was a lot of money and coke was a treat (or perhaps set up so as a plan by my parents) Here is a link to ads from the 50s and today for soft drinks. http://www.neatorama.com/2010/10/26/serving-size/

I do suspect that the relative cost of soft drinks has come down drastically over the 60 years. Back then there were also no free refills the stuff was golden.
