Madoff was a bad example

Yes, Madoff acted illegally, whereas the bankers who dealt in securities acted stupidly (perhaps dishonestly or unethically, and perhaps in some cases illegally). Nonetheless, what defines a successful capitalist? Were these bankers who became personally wealthy at the expense of the markets and taxpayers successful?

Well, yeah, in capitalism, one of the scorecards of success is how much money you make. There are other measures of success that can coexist with capitalism -- happiness, for example -- that are less easily measured.
