in 1970 lower income was 25% middle was 61% and upper was 14% In 2011 lower was 29, middle was51% and upper was 20%. This suggests a hollowing out of the middle both upwards and downwards over the 40 years. If you think about it it is the demise of the middle class unskilled job that is a large piece of the equation. Machines now do these jobs, the old jobs where it was said that you checked your brains at the door.
