Nothing newReader comment on: Ross Douthat on the Imperial Capital Submitted by Fast Eddie (United States), Sep 25, 2012 14:55 The only real news here is that the DC area is catching up with what happens in virtually every industrialized country on the globe, i.e., eventually the country's capital city is a magnet for wealth and it prospers even when the rest of the country is hurting economically. The population in DC and the surrounding MD and VA counties is growing is size and wealth and this trend will continue because, as Douthat notes, the federal govt. is a continual and growing source of high-income employment, both in terms of federally employed persons and in terms of lobbyists and others who feed at the federal trough. Almost 40 years ago I grew hay and corn and fattened cattle on my farm about 5 miles west of Dulles Airport on land which is now covered with $300K ++ mini-mansions on postage-stamp sized lots.
