First to ensure that the Union organization continues to exist, since this is the first rule of any organization. 2 To get the best short term deal for its members so the officers get reelected. The quality of the schools is not their concern nor should it be. The root of the Chicago strike was the issue of who gets hired/re-hired. If a union can not use senority to protect its members jobs, then the union officers will be replaced until they do. If you recall this has been one of the key demands for unions for over 110 years, members get a first crack at rehiring.
