Freedom Trade-Off

Reader comment on: NY Times Settles With Singapore

Submitted by Frederick Van Bennekom (United States), Mar 25, 2010 18:12

My business has taken me to Singapore and Dubai in the past year, neither of which is high on the list of countries with political freedom, but they are far from totalitarian regimes. I asked one of my contacts, a British ex-pat, why he chose to live where he had no freedom to vote and where one has to limit his political speech. He said that in Britain over 50% of his income went to the government, but in his adopted home, taxes were minimal and the government didn't interfere with his business -- no registrations, no regulation. He felt the trade-off of political freedom for economic freedom was worth it.

While I might not agree, the argument gave me pause.
