Government clears tree debris from the streets at a minimum. I suspect the public schools are closed to minimize the transportation nightmare that the lack of subways causes. It appears that north of 39th street Manhattan traffic was a zoo. Further how many school children ride the subways to school? Given that one has to car pool to cross into Manhattan it makes sense not to put the additional load on a strained transit system that schools being opened would cause, even if the schools had power.

Most elementary schools in NYC are locally zoned, close enough for most kids to walk/scooter/bike. Some subways running starting Thursday supposedly.
