As you point out since the median income is 50k that doing better below the median than Romney did above won the election. Partly this may be due to the fact that Obama appeared to win the majority of those with advanced degrees. Now of course the question is how will the younger folks ideas change as they get older, is the narrative about moving right with age correct. (In my case the GOP moved so far right since 2004 that I got forced to Obama, but then I live in Tx, I did vote for W both times). In one sense it's somewhat the opposite story Ronald Reagan told of being forced by the movement of the democrats to be a republican.
