The journalist does not try to make an immediate profit off the information (recall that some folks from Business Week got caught taking info and playing the market with it a few years ago). Yes they make make a high salary, but are in general also barred by corporate conflict of interest rules from trading on any information they may gather. (until the piece is published, the crime is more trading on information that is not public than anything else)
