Let me give an example to back up your final points.Reader comment on: John Cochrane on the Fiscal Cliff Submitted by Lyle (United States), Dec 25, 2012 13:17 The technology exists today to place both motion detectors as well as microphones/speakers in a house connected to an IT system that would replace the lifealert type system. If for example the system detected mayday being said three times (it is a word that would not occur 3 times in a row in conversation) it would come up and ask for if you need help. Further motion sensors in the bathrooms, set to call for help if there is no motion in any of the bathrooms after say 6 hours would call for help. All this is technologically possible but not currently available. Imagine a super wall wort that has the mike and speaker that you plug into a wall electric socket and it communicates via wi-fi.
