The problem, of course, is that our political class is guided by the eminent economic wisdom of the New York Times and Washington Post.

For example ...

Shortly after he was elected Governor of Maryland, Martin O'Malley held a special legislative session to raise taxes in order to address a "structural deficit" in the state's budget. The problem is that this deficit amounted to 7% of the budget. The state's budget itself had doubled over the previous ten years - averaging an 8% rise each year over the decade. Did the Washington Post recommend that Maryland due what any other organization - business or family - whose spending had increased so quickly and cut the budget? No! It praised O'Malley and the legislature for showing courage and raising taxes! When spending is considered sacrosanct, the only flexibility you have is in how much you will increase taxes. That's they way too many in government think.
