Democracy is messy

Reader comment on: Where Your Tax Dollar Goes

Submitted by ben (United States), Apr 15, 2010 10:11

Inevitably, many dollars are spent on things people of all political stripes disagree with, that is the nature of a messy democracy. We all must be vigilant and guard against tax dollars going towards things we don't like. Agricultural subsidies would be high on my list, along with prisons (not prisons themselves i suppose, but the laws which result in us criminalizing medical problems like addiction - we would have to change the laws before cutting the prisons). Thankfully, most of the money the government spends doesn't go towards pickle research, but towards medicare, social security and defense. The is widespread agreement in our country that these are all good things. Even Future of capitalism seems to agree!
