Union members want the best deal they can get. They vote for leaders who can get this. If it kills the job, well that is the problem of the management. Union leaders do not have any more responsiblity to society than management does but only to their stakeholders. (Just like company managment according to the current view is only responsible to the stockholder). If you want unions to care about the larger society, then similarly companies must do likewise.
