Our country is more civilized today

Women have the right to vote, we have a social safety net, schools are integrated etc. Of course not all of these things are a direct result of higher taxes, but when we expand the franchise and civil rights and more people are making decision about how the country allocates its wealth, the wealthy can no longer outvote everyone else and keep taxes at 1.3%. Perhaps it is a chicken and egg issue, did civil rights and social progress come because of higher taxation, or the reverse. But I am exceedingly tired of anyone cherry picking facts from the past about taxation without taking full account of the good and the bad of the time period.
