Branstad concedes too much

Reader comment on: Two on Occupational Licensing

Kudos to Gov. Branstad. Alas, he concedes the moral high ground to his opponents when he claims "Some of these (licenses) are necessary for the health and safety of our citizens." Where is the evidence for this? I doubt it was ever true, but today a moment's thought will show that we are better off judging services providers' ability for ourselves, with the help of online reputation systems like Yelp.

To take just one case, had Bernie Madoff not been licensed by the state his customers would surely have been more diligent in vetting his claims.
