ProThought you ask "how is being gay a liberal cause?" Surely you jest. That is not the political question. The political question is whether or not governments should be forced to redefine marriage for gay individuals, whether or not we can legislate sexual morality between individuals, whether or not private employers can determine who they are allowed to hire or fire for whatever reason they so choose. In other words, there are all sorts of political questions associated with individual behavior and family law and policy. Who you choose to love or not love is indeed a individual and personal matter -- although your immortal soul is at stake and you might want to think about it -- very carefully.
