As I wrote on seveal ocassions for the New York Post blog Capitol Punishment, the merger was also helped by Comcast's commitment to minority "access" to computers and high-speed internet by establishing an entire low-cost category for some subscribers while maintaining their high-prices for others. The first beneficiaries of this largesse in the form of reduced-price laptops and free internet from home were Chicago public school kids in a splashy ceremony attended by Mayor Emanuel. No word on whether some of these no-doubt needy recipients were already TV cable subscribers, however.
