Reader comment on: Bribery at the Buildings Dept. — Again

Submitted by John Gillis (United States), Feb 11, 2015 17:29

Excellent item on the unending corruption at the DOB (Dept. of Buildings). I presume the editor is aware that with suitable research one could write an article 10 or 20 times as long, cataloging the arrests and revelations of bribery every 5 or 10 years in the DOB over the past 150 years.

Getting rid of the DOB would be a great act of freedom and a blow to bribery, but people are so misled about this topic that they think removing such an agency would be a danger to the body politic. But the opposite would be the truth -- since in a private system, insurance companies would require inspections to certify buildings are safe, and since the companies have serious money on the line, they will be much more likely to guarantee that the private inspections are done correctly.
