In this case there were no beds available in western va and the son stabbed his father and eventually shot and killed himself. Consider that before Kennedy's changes to make mental health parity there would have been no coverage at all. Which was the historical case with health insurance.

Of course this raises the more general question by increasing individual rights compared to the 1950s we have reduced institutionalization but at what cost?
