Senator Paul vs the NYT

Reader comment on: A New NYT Low

From the NYT: "In June, Mr. Yass donated more than $2 million to three super PACs aligned with Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, who has called for taxing all income at a flat rate of 14.5 percent. That change in itself would save wealthy supporters like Mr. Yass millions of dollars."

I thought Paul's plan also did away with all but 2 or 3 tax deductions. For instance, I thought he left intact the mortgage tax deduction. Anyway, my point is if nearly every tax deduction (loophole?) is done away with and you pay 14.5% on everything you earn (regardless of whether it's work income or dividend income), how can the NYT make the leap that such a plan will give the wealthy more money? I guess they can say that by simple extrapolation.....which isn't really investigative journalism, but more like internet gossip.
