Just like Tito in Yugoslavia it appears that in a country with severe ethnic differences you need a strongman to keep things more or less peaceful by being more feared than the other ethnic groups. In addition with the exception of Tunisia are the folks in any country affected by the arab spring better off? I would say not. If the choice is a dictator or anarcy, the dictator is a better choice for most. (yes it might mean keeping your mouth shut but you will still be alive).
