Are private monopolies in fact harmful?

What evidence have you that a private monopoly, that is, one not enforced by government edict, is harmful or immoral? I suggest that it is neither, and that efforts to regulate the same are both. I highly recommend Alan Greenspan's essay on the subject, inspired by his association with Ayn Rand. Published in 1962, it is still timely:
