It worked badly for John McCain and Walter Mondale. The women they chose hurt the ticket. A candidate should choose a VP based on competence, especially the politically inexperienced Donald Trump. George Bush and Bill Clinton chose VPs based on competence, not balance. That worked well for them politically, and the country benefited by having competent people in office.
