Re the World War II piece I believe that the USSR really won the war against germany as a war of attrition that ground germany down. Consider that the USSR stopped the Germans at Stalingrad and then turn the tides at Kursk the next summer.

On the invention side at least for Edison there were a number of inventions of the incandescent light in Europe at about the same time. Likewise Morse really did not invent the electric telegraph, it was invented by Cooke and Wheatstone in the UK.
