A lot of regulation including much occupational licensing is handled by the states. If the R's were serious about this they would do more de-regulation at the state level, in particular in states where the R's control both houses of the legislature and the governorship. Since they have not really done a lot beyond eliminating licensing for geologists in Az, it seems that they talk but don't really act.

To give a counter example Rick Perry for the first time introduced building permit requirements for building in unincorporated areas in Tx yet Perry was all in favor of deregulation, or is it that state level regulation is good, but federal level regulation is bad?
