Actually an interesting thought.Reader comment on: Taxing Online Gambling Submitted by Lyle (United States), May 23, 2010 19:31 Given that it is impossible politically to totally ban things, because people would not stand for the expenditure required, one might as well legalize and tax. Nevada in remote counties has the right idea about prostitution making it legal and taxed. Might as well legalize gambling since it can't be stopped. Likewise drug use that does not threaten others, i.e. crystal meth might still be illegal, as well as operating machinery under the influence, just like operating machinery drunk is illegal today. Since the vice practically can not be eliminated, then we might as well tax it. It is noted that taxation tends to reduce demand, witness tobacco, so why legalize and tax the other substances, rather than let criminals have the money. Since it's always going to be around the state might as well make a profit off of these activities. Note: Comments are moderated by the editor and are subject to editing. Comment on this item |
