Thompson Houston had better management in the judgement of JP Morgan (the man). Also Edison had taken the DC side in the current wars of the time, and lost to Westinghouse/Tesla and AC. Charles Coffin the ceo of Thompson Houston, and then GE did not have an investment in the current wars but went the way the market demanded. Note that GE also almost went bankrupt in the 1890s by financing to many local electric plants which could not meet their payments (See the Power Makers by Maury Klien for details) (So twice GE has gotten too involved with finance and almost went belly up over it.
