If you think tax rates will be lower after you retire than a traditional 401k makes sense if the same or higher than a roth 401k makes sense. It basically is a pay me now or pay me more later i.e. the traditional 401k you pay taxes on the gains whereas the roth model you pay taxes on the contributions, and none when you withdraw as well as not having required minimum distributions when you reach 70.5 years old.
