There is no question this hurts Israel

This boat was meant to provoke a violent response and it did. Israel made a strategic mistake, even if tactical actions of the soldiers on board were warranted as I believe they were. The important question is why the soldiers were on board in the first place. Was there really no other way to stop this ship than boarding it with armed commandos? Did this really have to take place in international waters? Knowing the world is largely aligned against Israel and that Israel is always held to a higher standard, it must be perfect, and it surely wasn't in this case. And the irony of course is that Egypt has now lifted the blockade, enabling goods (and weapons) to start moving freely into Gaza once again.

The larger question is this: What is Netanyahu's plan? Whatever it is, this event surely did not help him politically at home, or in the eyes of the international community, and makes it that much more difficult to move forward with any meaningful peace talks. And how does Israel react to the next flotilla, which is surely being planned as I write this?
