Donald Trump's list of vice presidential candidates apparently includes Governor Christie, Newt Gingrich, Senator Sessions, and Governor Pence. I'm usually not in the business of offering political advice, and I'm even less in the business of suggesting that jobs be allocated on the basis of race or gender rather than other qualifications. I like Mr. Pence, and I can even see the attraction of Mr. Gingrich, though I think picking Mr. Gingrich would be a mistake. But if I were Trump, or a Trump adviser, I'd be trying really hard to find a qualified woman, black, or Hispanic running mate. Trump's view may be that what he called "the dishonest media" might portray him as racist and sexist even if he chose Thurgood Marshall, Cesar Chavez, or Susan B. Anthony as his running mate. That may be correct. But in view of last week's shootings, a presidential ticket consisting of two white men may be a little too retro for 2016 America.

The vote on Britain's exit from the European Union was one where there are reasonable arguments on both sides.

On the "remain" side, if one generally favors, as I do, the free flow of people and goods across borders, an exit raises risks of new barriers. And Britain was probably a force pulling Europe toward generally less socialist policies.

On the "exit" side, I can definitely sympathize with British desire not to be ruled by a bunch of far-away bureaucrats, who, if they were elected at all, were elected largely by people from other countries.

But with the results looking like a win for "exit," here are a few election-night thoughts to provide context.

1. This is a classic example of "exit" within the Albert Hirchman "exit, voice, and loyalty" framework that I've written about here in the past.

The cutting edge of retail is the topic of my column this week, about the feud between Donald Trump and Jeffrey Bezos and how it might be resolved:

Americans used to worry about job loss because our manufacturing jobs had turned into lower-wage positions as Walmart greeters or cashiers selling made-in-China goods. Then we worried about job-loss as the Walmart greeter and cashier jobs turned into temporary jobs picking out orders at Amazon warehouses (or overseeing robots that did that).

Now we're approaching the day at which we don't need either the Walmart store or even the American-based Amazon warehouse or distribution center. Instead, the item just gets mailed directly to your house by some low-wage worker in China.

Talk about your unintended consequences. A new working paper by two Notre Dame University economists, Kasey Buckles and Daniel Hungerman, issued by the National Bureau of Economic Research, found that making condoms available in high schools, rather than preventing teen pregnancy, serves instead to promote it. They write:

We find clear evidence that access to condoms in schools leads to an increase in teen fertility...The effects are reasonably large in magnitude: access to condoms for the entire high-school-aged population in a county would lead to about 5 extra births per 1,000 teenage women, or a 10 percent increase relative to the mean. Since the average program covered about one-third of the teenage women in the county, the typical program led to an additional 2 births per 1,000 teenage women... School condom distribution programs could encourage risky sexual behaviors, promote the use of the condom over methods that better prevent pregnancy, or cause schools to shift resources away from more effective programs.
