Of course Breinart isn't in the classroom for 40 hours a week; he's not supposed to be! Even "full-time" students are only in the classoom 12-18 hours a week -- the whole point is that most of the "work" in academia is grading papers, preparing lectures, doing research, and working on other projects related to your field. I'm sure you already know this, so next time don't sabotage your own good point (that these professors are overpaid considering that they work at public institutions, especially ones with major budget problems) with falsely premised asides.
