Editorialist's stupidity

Reader comment on: The Times and the First Amendment

I do not understand why so many of the money-hemorrhaging newspapers like the NY Times and Washington Post actively drive away thinking readers by publishing this sort of irrational self-serving rubbish, whether by in-house or syndicated writers. While it clearly is possible to be on the left or right of the political spectrum and not insult readers, it is equally clear that these papers' publishers regularly push the envelope of stupidity further and further for reasons apparently known only to them. E.J. Dionne's Wash Post piece today praising the auto bailout is a stellar example of everything I'm referring to, combining ingredirnts of incorrect information and outright falsehoods, all seasoned with a sauce of illogical thinking into a perfect stew. Considering that virtually everything available in these papers is also available free on line, what reason can there be for repeatedly insulting their readers' intelligence?
