really? Which ones? Seriously, is the purpose of your statement to inspire pity for the fund managers?

I am sure that there are some fund managers who aren't doing as well as they used to; But since you asked to parse the President's remarks, it seem disengenuous to claim that "looking at one year" in the abstract is somehow unfair.
The point is that Wall Street generally is doing rather well, not just this year or last, but for the past generation; The income and living standards for the bottom 98% of America have stagnated or sunk over the same period.
So on balance, even if you can find one fund manager who isn't earning a billion, lets not pretend there is any reason to feel pity for them.
