High Speed Railway

Reader comment on: Republicans and High-Speed Rail

High speed and ordinary railways linking all major cities would be good for the US. In most of Europe where I have lived I have been able to travel most anywhere I wished by rail. To me this was a dream fulfilled because I am partially sighted and unable to drive a car. In this US, (I am an American) this is not possible. Here in the country of my birth I find myself severely confined. True, I can travel by air almost anywhere, but getting from the airports (usually miles outside city limits, is not so easy. That is my dilemma, but also the dilemma of anyone not able or allowed to drive.

Many, if not most, of the Europeans I met on the train were actually drivers, but they had good reasons for their preference: parking difficulties, cheaper by rail, convenience, etc. America is a big country,so why not here when it is possible to achieve in such a great Country? Reading the pros and cons put forth on the issue, became sad and absolutely disgusted. Those against such a grand scheme seem to be because it happens to be on Obama's agenda and he says it is good for the country. I always wondered why we didn't have a decent railway system long before Obama was ever heard of Obama. This is the 21st century and a high speed railway network in the US would be most fitting. Please give it a chance.
