I do not understand your outrage at the assertion that if any State had opted out of the Interstate Highway System then that state would have left behind. I do not understand the comment to be a knock against the State but a comment on the difficulty of transportation without methods to travel. There is nothing wrong with Ohio or Wisconsin, they are just distant from other parts of the country. Similarly, other parts of the country are distant from Ohio and Wisconsin. It is just a fact.

The debate about the need for high speed rail is a different matter. My belief is that the US population is not concentrated enough in most areas for such service to be economical. Boston to DC corridor, San Diego to San Francisco, maybe but Louisville, Ky to Denver Co. I just do not see it. Two fine cities but they do not have enough volume to support the service.
