If NPR is so wonderful, and deserves to be supported, then those who value it highly will continue or increase their support, when federal funding is withdrawn. Why should I pay for your jazz, and why should you pay for my shooting & hunting shows (not that NPR/PBS would ever have any of the latter).
If the Feds support it, they will inevitably want to dictate the slant and content of the programming, and combine it with increasing control of all media through the "Fairness Doctrine", until we ultimately have just one central Ministry of Truth.
