I had been sceptical, but on hearing of how centralised this all was, how people were being dragged away, tortured until they confessed in show-trials, and mostly shot, with a few 'lucky' ones sent for hard labour that would likely kill them, I realised that these really _were_ purges.

What did you say? I hope that's not true, because if it were, using the term 'purge' were the height of underserved victimhood-claiming and an insult to those who actually were purged in the Soviet Union.
