Reader comment on: Reparations for Slavery

If anything, I have chosen to live my life using basic principles that allow me to decide if a political policy is moral, and rational. Reparations are neither. You are taking the assets of people who have done no wrong, and giving it to people who have not suffered the privation of slavery. But more than that, your idea is stupid, yes stupid. You say that with the reparations a family might be able to start a business or use it for education, something practical and attainable. That is a stretch. You have families that have been distorted and mutated by welfare programs practically forcing them to have children with only one parent. Many if not most, have not completed high school and have not attended college. Your expectation of having such families take the best actions with that reparation money is naive. Worse, I see your plan as a way for the majority to say, "OK we done our share and now you are on your own." Quite frankly, it is a way a way of washing your hands of the economic disability of black families. We don't need to treat the symptoms we need to treat the disease and your plan does not do that.
