importance of luckReader comment on: The Giving Pledge, 'Giving Back,' and Government Submitted by Lyle (United States), Dec 9, 2010 17:24 In addition to their own hard work there is an element of luck in these folks. For example had Gary Kildall (CPM) been there when IBM showed up Bill Gates would not have made the breakthru that made Microsoft what it is. There is a lot of being at the right place at the right time in success. In some cases its the luck of making it to the patent office a few minutes before the next person, or meeting the right person, such as Carniege meeting and impressing Thomas Scott of the Penn railroad. If folks reflect on luck they may well feel that since luck played a part they owe more than just providing jobs to others, but may reflect on the idea that to whom much is given much is expected.
