A Few ThoughtsReader comment on: Why the Left Hates Horatio Alger Submitted by Peter Greulich (United States), Aug 12, 2023 10:07 Here are a few thoughts on this article that showed up in the Wall Street Journal. Sorry for the long post. I hope though that it shows I have processed what you have written for myself. Thanks for the challenging thoughts that I agree with in part, but not in whole. 1) First, I don't care for generalizations like "the left" and "the right" as if they are monolithic entities that aren't composed of individuals who think for themselves. I consider myself "left of center" on some issues and "right of center" on other issues. My favorite saying is "the only generalization a good author uses is that 'all generalizations are false.' " 2) I would recommend for individuals who want to understand who built this country to read a collection of books by Forbes during the 20th Century. He did an amazing job capturing the true-life stories of the industrialists who built this country. It is amazing how many of these individuals achieved success while losing their fathers who died from true "manual/physical" labor before the advent of "labor-saving" devices and a time when no one would hire a "man over forty years of age" because a "man"--and yes it was mostly men, was physically used up by this age. Most of these successful individuals, as teenagers, had to take over their father's responsibilities and earn a living for the family. A list of the books with reviews is here: https://www.discerningreaders.com/b-c-forbes-publisher-home-page.html 3) The above thought though leads me to my last comment and that is that "today, too many of our chief executive officers are 'capitalist-driven' rather than 'industrialist driven.' " I would recommend reading one of my articles on 21st Century capitalist-driven chief executives vs 20th Century industrialist-driven chief executives. Seems when "we" want to point the finger at others--da generalized left, "we" have three fingers pointing back at "us," which they want to classify as the generalized right, eh? ;) https://www.discerningreaders.com/capitalism-needs-industrialist-ceos.html Humbly submitted by a person--just right of center, who loves history, reading about our industrialists and our "capitalist system" as our 20th Century industrialists leaders saw it . . . a system driven by those who were building something to last and kept Wall Street at arms length. P.S. One of America's greatest journalists--a female, also captured two of these industrialists in action: One ran General Electric and the other U.S. Steel Corporation! https://www.discerningreaders.com/ida-m-tarbell-corporate-books-publications.html Cheers, - Peter E.
