Reader comment on: More on Ryan's Path to Prosperity

Representative Ryan's solutions to the problems of the poor and the hungry are not solutions at all, merely moving the problems to another jurisdiction.

Sooner or later, hopefully sooner, Republicans are going to have to come to the probably painful realization that we are a nation, one and inseparable, and we have national problems which are not attributable to the national government. Energy policy, federal electric grid, scientific research, infrastructure e.g. bridges, roads, clean water, clean air clean food, flood control list goes on.

For example, just giving over the task of providing succor to the above referenced poor and hungry to the states does nothing to solve the problem. Fifty jurisdictions trying to legislate solutions to these problems. The word nightmare comes to mind. How many people will have to freeze, or starve, or die from lack of medical care before this Christian country discovers its core values and acts for these American citizens. We already lag discouragingly far behind many other countries in almost every area of quality of life assessments. We are moving from the home of the brave to the home of the cheap and the selfish. Every "solution" offered by the Republicans rides on the backs of the least of us (least in money). No one likes to pay taxes. That is axiomatic. Ability to pay and a fee for living in a country that provides the opportunities doesn't seem too unreasonable.

One set of solutions I would offer in line with the stated goals of the Republicans would be to reduce salaries and perks to members of Congress (flights home, per diem for having to stay in Washington, etc.), no more free health insurance, no retirement. You get the idea. Now that should be the first order of business, especially from the Tea Party members in the interest of consistency and adherence to their stated values, of course. You get the idea. After that series of reductions in the federal government, set them on the poor, like a pack of dogs.
