Having Met Stan

Reader comment on: Education and Unemployment

He is an interesting fellow full of ideas, at one time ECD (Energy Conversion Devices) (his company at the time) did solar, nicad batteries, optical (dvd style) media, computer memory, hydrogen storage, and electrical switches. It was based on looking at chemistry of elements that tend to be neglected. At the time one interesting item at ECD was a lot of periodic charts on the walls of conference rooms. He is one of the few business men I met who wanted to change the world, not just make money.

Of course as an investment ECD was a disaster every so often going for another capital raise as it ran a huge accumulated deficit and I believe never made much money. In essence here is the gap that the corporate form does not do a good job of funding research that may not pay off for years.

The linked profile gets into the Periodic Table part of it. He sounds like quite a character. A lot of good businessmen and businesses are mission-driven not just profit-driven.
