Reader comment on: The Food Stamp President

Your comment that private charitable institutions would take up feeding the hungry if food stamps were discontinued is at best misguided. It's akin to the beloved
"trickle-down" theory of the right, which does not work, never did work, and most likely never will work. Your comment assumes that those that have will share with those that don't. When we see that wealth is concentrated in the top 1% of our country's population, and when we see health care being rationed to those that can afford it, we realize that those that have usually hoard the good stuff so only they can enjoy it without sharing. All in all, those that have are not good at sharing with those that don't. This is why government is in the business of "insuring" the welfare of its citizens.

I'm sure you can provide isolated incidents of charitable work by some small minority of those that "have", but for the most part they keep what they have from those that don't.
